It's just GORGEOUS!<br />

This is another beautiful quilt from Lauri. I got this photo while it was sitting in a patch of sunlight. It really glows like a stained glass window--it's so beautiful! I should be returning it to her tomorrow.<br />

Kathy C is the mother in law to a friend of mine who bought a gift certificate for Christmas last year. It took several months before she finally called and brought over three quilts for me to work on. This is one of them that appeared on my doorstep. Somehow the other two didn't get photographed. <br />
<br />
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/58192_10201521681745608_1737592452_n.jpg" width="191" /><br />
<br />
In the beadworks, I did a few commissions including one for Samira that she gave as a Christmas gift:<br />
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/1477913_10202560416633331_242850468_n.jpg" width="180" /><br />
<br />
And one for Jadwiga:<br />
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-a-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/t1/1425774_10202300333891425_1453515743_n.jpg" width="180" /><br />
<br />
I also made a bunch of beads for the SCA's Lampworkers Guild to be given as gifts.<br />
<img height="320" src="https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/12951_10202608512635701_863895882_n.jpg" width="180" /> <img height="180" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/1492191_10202608510715653_224082623_o.jpg" width="320" /><br />
<br />
<a href="https://scontent-a-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1503451_10202787976682190_177802601_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://scontent-a-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1503451_10202787976682190_177802601_n.jpg" width="225" /></a>I am also working on a weaving commission for a friend in the Middle Kingdom. It has a Runic letter, Tiwaz, which is also the symbol for the god Tyr.<br />
<br />
There are more projects coming, including the completion of a red tunic that will accompany the green tunic (that I don't have a good photograph of yet). Enjoy!karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-67743461126371130632013-07-06T22:37:00.001-07:002013-07-07T23:43:00.216-07:00Raining & Pouring QuiltsAs they say, when it rains, it pours...and it's pouring a little here! I missed a couple weeks of working due to a back strain injury, which took a couple weeks to heal up, but now I'm back to work, catching up to a bunch of deadlines that are upon me!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In no particular order, here are the items I've been working on for customers. Pardon the blurry pictures--I need to make improvements to the hanging and lighting situation I've got here at Ye Merrie Quiltery.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1010675_10201397293435978_1846110164_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1010675_10201397293435978_1846110164_n.jpg" width="191" /></a>Judy J., owner of Thread Mongers, asked me to finish up this quilt with one of the threads she sells in her shop, Valdani hand dyed color #86. It's a 30 wt. thread, so it's about as heavy as the Signature thread. Usually I use a 50 wt., so I had to make adjustments to the tension and speed, as well as waxing the tension discs a bit to help the thread glide through. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1053132_10201390558067598_2032957121_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/1053132_10201390558067598_2032957121_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
Since this was a Halloween-themed group of fabrics, it only made sense to sew a bunch of pumpkins and vines all over the surface! I found this pattern on Leah Day's 365 Quilting Patterns, from her blog, www.freemotionquilting.blogspot.com. I love her site with the variety of patterns and videos on how to execute each of the patterns. Here's a detailed shot of the quilting--very simple loops, circles and lines.</div>

<div>
This is a quilt that is currently on the frame for Marlys, who is the mother of Linda D., the lady who brought me two baby quilts a couple months ago. This is a gift for a grandson who is going off to college. She made this flannel quilt in the school colors, and I'm quilting it with a medium stipple in the main body of the quilt, with some special details in the black border and corners. More pictures will be posted later when this is finished.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
Kathy C., a new customer, but the mother-in-law of an acquaintance in the SCA, sent me three quilts to work on. This one is due back in her hands next week, but I'm having trouble connecting with her. Payment apparently got lost in the mail, so I've been waiting to mail it to her. Hopefully it'll arrive Monday so I can get it back to her in time for the auction or raffle that this will be in. This has just a basic stipple all over.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Details of this quilt show the pattern of roses; a squiggle roughly flower shaped and a spiral into the middle of the flower.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/969511_10201397509721385_468691586_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/969511_10201397509721385_468691586_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div>
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/1001344_207195682769500_1268715910_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/1001344_207195682769500_1268715910_n.jpg" width="191" /></a>Karen M. handed me this amazing work of art to stitch feathers all over. Having practiced on a King size quilt for myself, I felt confident that I could do it justice. I did a slightly different feather with hers than I did with mine, but it seemed to call for it...or rather, it's just the way it started looking, so I went with it. I have a belief that some quilts "talk" to you; not that I'm actually hearing voices, but I can envision what it needs. The big trick is to get your vision executed into your project.<br />
<br />
This looks more pink than it really is--I will have to make adjustments to the lighting that I use to take pictures, as well as a place to hang them up with good angles and light. While this is hanging on the wall, it's clearly not tall enough to display anything this long and the lighting in this room is abysmally poor. I am also not a professional photographer...I may have to ask a few photo friends for some tips!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/374511_10200743940102553_2026612715_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/374511_10200743940102553_2026612715_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have several quilt tops that have crossed the machine recently. Starting with this auction quilt that my sister made for her daughter's school. The kids in the school made the white blocks, adding images and their favorite scriptures, and she off-set it with a pieced border and sashing between. It spent so little time at my house that I didn't have a chance to photograph it when it was finished. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PcNlw3KwEsY/UWj4fNXnpUI/AAAAAAAAAJc/4owdBCgSL5I/s1600/20130329_11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PcNlw3KwEsY/UWj4fNXnpUI/AAAAAAAAAJc/4owdBCgSL5I/s320/20130329_11.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then my customer, Linda D., called me up and asked if I had time to do a pair of baby quilts. Not for a pair of twins, but for two friends who are having babies at the same time. One is known to be a girl, but the other is of unknown gender. So the first she made with green and pink, so I quilted it with loose artsy roses. It quilted up like a dream, and I added the flannel binding to the edge. The flannel was a little trickier to work with. Grrrr...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/892852_10200786913816869_199279564_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/892852_10200786913816869_199279564_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/885121_10200782221419562_1692073869_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/885121_10200782221419562_1692073869_o.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-391KdBmCsBo/UWj4fSJpCcI/AAAAAAAAAJk/DE2rf6R3RPA/s1600/20130329_12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-391KdBmCsBo/UWj4fSJpCcI/AAAAAAAAAJk/DE2rf6R3RPA/s320/20130329_12.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second baby, due to its unknown status, is going to receive a more gender-neutral color combination. The quilting is similar, which I told her could be roses or snakes...depending on the gender. The outer border is black minkee, which has some issues with stretching. The blue binding went on easily, although there was just barely enough of it. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XXdCoQC6mvg/UWj4fd525nI/AAAAAAAAAJo/07Ea898qw3A/s1600/20130321_6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XXdCoQC6mvg/UWj4fd525nI/AAAAAAAAAJo/07Ea898qw3A/s320/20130321_6.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lauri gave me a quilt to work on for a raffle for a cancer fundraiser. I don't recall which organization it is supporting...sorry. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SFfi_v4wVqM/UWj4gRuuJBI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/V44zUxU14Vk/s1600/20130412_12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SFfi_v4wVqM/UWj4gRuuJBI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/V44zUxU14Vk/s320/20130412_12.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also put my daughter's Girl Scout quilt on the frame to finish up that quilt for her. It still needs binding, but she's very excited that it's almost done! I have to dig around and see what I have for binding fabric. I think I have enough of one of the green fabrics I used on the back.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The most recent project, I've been quilting up some pieces for Quilts of Valor that were brought to me by Kathy W. She provided the tops and paid for the backing material. I'm hoping that they can also spring for the batting, since that costs $8.50 a yard, but the time and thread I can happily donate. There are five in this series...sorry they're sideways. </div>

Not sure what I'm going to do about my camera...apparently it got jostled around in my purse and now the screen is busted. 2/3 of the screen is black, so I can't see what I'm snapping and I can't turn off the flash now. I just got it a year ago...frustrated that I may have to replace it already.</div>

My next project may be quilting up the 9-patch scrappy top that I put together a few months ago. </div>

I'm not just a quilter, I also do a number of other fiber arts. I have made socks, tunics, and tablet woven bands.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/185833_10200199769298623_1744555386_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/185833_10200199769298623_1744555386_n.jpg" width="320" /></a>Here a 14th century book of hours illustration features a woman weaving a band on an upright loom. It looks like tablet woven bands, but it's hard to make out the details. In her left hand are the four-hole cards, and she has a heck of a beater in her right hand. I'm unclear how the other end of the weaving is set up on that vertical piece of wood...what is it for? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/774223_10200345458180754_1646181533_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/774223_10200345458180754_1646181533_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Of course, I don't use a loom like this to weave my bands--I use an inkle loom. I've made around 12 pieces so far, selling a few, giving a few away, and keeping a few for myself. These are some of the pieces that I took to the recent medieval faire.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/269284_10200464994569089_135827170_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/269284_10200464994569089_135827170_n.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Recently, I made a test piece based on a 6th century Norwegian pattern. It's a short band, measuring only about 1 3/4 yards, but I have already been asked to weave another for a woman in green and gold. That'll be next after I finish...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/541444_10200498903256785_1790759447_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/541444_10200498903256785_1790759447_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
...this band! This is a double-sided "Anglo-Saxon" band that I found online. I suspect that it may be documentably period, given that the author of the web site I found called it Anglo Saxon, however, she did not list the date or source of the pattern. It may be in a book that I do not currently have access to--it's out of print and there are no booksellers that I can find that currently carries it. More research is needed to find out more information about this pattern...as are 25 pairs of fishing spinners to help untwist this mess...all the cards continuously turn in the same direction.<br />
<br />
Over in the quilting zone, here are a few of the quilted pieces I've finished lately:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/154478_4922030610277_619213711_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/154478_4922030610277_619213711_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
Monkey Madness! This was actually a two-sided quilt. This panel with the borders on one side, and a pieced quilt on the other. For some reason, I can't find the photo of the other side. Clearly, I'm a quilter, not a photographer!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/820678_10200474440885241_211570257_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/820678_10200474440885241_211570257_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
For Malcolm! My nephew was born on the last day of January. I finished the quilt for him a couple weeks before he was born and got an opportunity to deliver it to the new family in person. Barring any miracles, he is the last of the cousins to be born. I still owe him one more quilt that my sister and I are going to make together in the near future. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/819289_10200502220339710_2119166474_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/819289_10200502220339710_2119166474_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Blue and white...like jeans and t-shirts...reminds me of cowboys! I like cowboys... This is a great scrappy blue and white that didn't photograph as well as it could. Remember that bit about not being a photographer? Besides, I took the picture with my phone, which is not the greatest. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0PRk3n5a8do/URNZAb3cNKI/AAAAAAAAAJM/Jet0da9c9fk/s1600/20130128_3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0PRk3n5a8do/URNZAb3cNKI/AAAAAAAAAJM/Jet0da9c9fk/s320/20130128_3.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Unfortunately, I haven't gotten good pictures of a few more recent pieces I was working on. One of them I completely forgot to take a photo of when it was finished! All I have is a picture of it in process. These were some really lovely fall colors! Just makes you want to go bake a pumpkin pie! She just wanted a simple stipple over the surface, which I debated whether to do it in gold, black or grey. In the end, it was the black thread that looked the best.<br />
<br />
Next on the frame is a Sounders Fan Baby quilt. Rave green and blue! It's really a great pattern and the colors are bright and cheerful. I'll be cheering in those colors soon! Go Sounders!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/307372_10200478997759160_661552324_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/307372_10200478997759160_661552324_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
In the wings are five pieces for Quilts of Valor and four that will be given to patients at Children's Hospital, plus a few quilt tops for myself that I finished recently. One of them is a UFO that's at least 10 years old. Note that this quilt is pinned to the log cabin quilt hanging on the wall--again, photography skills lacking. I started making this when my middle daughter was not quite 2. She's now 11. Time to finish this up and get it on her bed!karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-67340347730922429652012-11-05T13:00:00.000-08:002012-11-05T13:01:17.428-08:00Fall 2012<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/621337_4775617030029_1050124852_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/621337_4775617030029_1050124852_o.jpg" width="320" /></a>A rather dark photo--darn camera is not the highest quality. This is a quilt top is destined to be a tree skirt, hence the lack of quilting in the center of the quilt; it'll be cut out and bound. This is an all over ribbons pattern, a fun celebratory quilt pattern!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/52795_4675683451752_801975077_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/52795_4675683451752_801975077_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Blurry sideways penguins. Did I mention the poor photo quality? I hung it up on the wall to photograph, then realized it was sideways. Whoops. This is a quilt top I finished for my mother in law, and I think it's destined for a nephew who loves penguins. :) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/622165_4675654051017_640147762_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/622165_4675654051017_640147762_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a smaller quilt top that was made by Joy and her mother, Violet for a friend who is ill. You may note that it's very similar to the previous quilt from Joy--many of the same fabrics were used in both. It's the perfect lap size for snuggling under during treatments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/665253_4672376809088_1346912593_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/665253_4672376809088_1346912593_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Go Cougs! This is a shop sample for Judy J., owner of Thread Mongers. She asked me to use two different threads for this quilt top from her stock. One was a nice poly/rayon from Superior Threads in a colorway called "Lava". It was really nice! The other was a glittery thread that was a bit of a pain to work with. I don't know who made it and I wouldn't trash their name publicly anyway. Other people may have a much better experience than I did, and who knows--maybe with more adjustments, I could make it work on my machine better, too. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/192642_4563195159615_1760538372_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/192642_4563195159615_1760538372_o.jpg" width="320" /></a>Lauri's quilt for Laura made with Laura's favorite colors--purple and green. Quilted with loopy hearts in a quick, all-over pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/578628_4563172759055_609386536_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/578628_4563172759055_609386536_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
A Christmas sampler for Kathy, quilted with small scrollwork all over, echoing the subtle print in the background fabric.<br />
<br />
It's been a busy few weeks here. Here's to many more!<br />

Karen, Ye Merrie Quilter (& Costumer!)karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-41454802479787513722012-08-28T21:24:00.001-07:002012-08-28T22:16:00.156-07:00Summertime 2012<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The great thing about having a quilt show is that you get a chance to take nicer photos of work that you've done. They're hanging up on standards, and this particular show had wide aisles so you could stand way back and get some good photos. A few of these may be repeats from earlier posts, but they look much nicer hanging up with great lighting!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/181110_4298292177206_75370770_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/181110_4298292177206_75370770_n.jpg" width="240" /></a>I finally have a great photo of my scrappy Pineapple Blossom quilt. It's 88" square...although I thought it was much bigger than that. Weird. When I hung it in my sewing room, it went floor to ceiling, which would have indicated to me that it would be 96". So either I measured wrong or I have short ceilings. Maybe I need to measure again.</div>

Much better lighting this time, and look! The whole thing is in the frame! With a binding!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YfOeWf9JfaI/UD2E6KFWthI/AAAAAAAAAIg/q6vznkqEWMM/s1600/20120827_160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YfOeWf9JfaI/UD2E6KFWthI/AAAAAAAAAIg/q6vznkqEWMM/s320/20120827_160.JPG" width="240" /></a>Judy J. made this quilt and now uses it as a backdrop for her display at her booth. She was also a vendor at our show as the owner of Thread Mongers. This was a fun quilt to work on! I love these oceanic colors and the rich royal blue. Also includes a binding this time, unlike the last time I photographed it on my floor.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MwCgjGu7qNg/UD2E8wgX_2I/AAAAAAAAAIo/SnXTprzLnxY/s1600/20120827_165.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MwCgjGu7qNg/UD2E8wgX_2I/AAAAAAAAAIo/SnXTprzLnxY/s320/20120827_165.JPG" width="320" /></a>Michele had me do this Christmas tablerunner for her several months ago. Again, better lighting, a binding, and a straight-on shot...fabulous!</div>

She really needed a big hug after losing her mother, as difficult as her mother had been all those years, and the day I presented it to her, she had just lost her job a day or two before. It was truly a labor of love for a very dear friend who was having a very rough time.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

I forget what the occasion was...perhaps it was another sympathy quilt. Maybe it was when she lost her father. I'll have to ask her. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

I haven't heard how much it sold for, but I hope it was a bunch--the quilt top was an original design by Joy! She said she's not a big fan of following patterns, except for block directions. After that, she makes her own designs using random blocks on a design wall. And most of the quilts she makes uses scraps, so clearly she is a talented and creative lady!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here is another quilt that I made for Judy J., a round robin that she made with a group of friends. Apparently it won Best in Class at the Skagit County fair! I'm pretty excited about that! I quilted it all over with leaves, except in the center block where I echo quilted around the star.</div>
<br />

I love the bright batiks she chose! I quilted this top with long bamboo leaves. I was inspired by another quilt that I just finished for Michele, a Mt. Fuji wall panel. Unfortunately, I didn't get any photos of that one.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/311776_4387851216126_2052919768_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/311776_4387851216126_2052919768_n.jpg" width="240" /></a>This is another "lasagna" quilt top that was made in the class by Donna. Funny thing is, Donna signed up to take the class and the teacher called in sick, so she ended up TEACHING the class! It's made from some really fun modern fabrics by Amy Butler, Kaffe Fassett and others. I did a very quick overall pattern of swirls and loops for this top. I used the Warm Company batting as an experiment for her to see if she can tolerate the weight.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/328282_4436352868637_580973570_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/328282_4436352868637_580973570_o.jpg" width="320" /></a>Kind of a blurry picture of Donna's Waterfall quilt. This was a really cool technique that she did that creates this quilt, and then the scraps creates another quilt with a completely different design. The batting was wonderful, too--a silk blend that is soft as...I don't know...something really soft! Donna has foot issues, so she needs a very light-weight batting on her bed quilts. The Warm Company batting is a little heavy, especially if it's paired with beefy cotton fabrics. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/336830_4399476026739_184630489_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/336830_4399476026739_184630489_o.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a close-up of the waterfall quilt, which I covered with a river over the top. I even included rocks in the river. On the edge, the border is covered with a calm lake surface of rippling water. Although the quilting was done, it wasn't ready for the quilt show; she didn't have time enough to bind it before the show. Hopefully I'll get a photo of the quilt once the binding is on!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That's about it for now...I have a couple of quilts ready for the frame and more that are on the way. Christmas is just around the corner...</div>

She requested this lovely flannel piece to be quilted with sharp angles and have the initials sewn into the center square. I think this is for her nephew, who was born recently. It's very soft and cozy and quilted up very nicely! <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/419783_3452489112658_1283689789_3468866_1332303209_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/419783_3452489112658_1283689789_3468866_1332303209_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
JuJu's belt is a commissioned piece. She wanted something that looked like watermelons with dark green on the outside, light green and pink on the inside and a black center. She's very excited about this being done and I hope to get it passed on to her soon.<br />
<br />
Also I finished Tara's two other quilts--another Packer's Quilt, Andy's Funky quilt, and the Hearts quilt. Unfortunately, I didn't get photos of two of them before they went on to their homes. The Packer quilt is a late Christmas gift, that is finally on its way to Wisconsin. The quilt top was sent to me in November, at the same time as the previous Packer quilt, but then a health emergency in the family delayed the Christmas celebrations. <br />
<br />
For Donna, I finished a Christmas quilt top. She requested that I use a specific batting--Quilters Dream--which I sourced and tried on the frame. It worked fairly well, but it was thinner and needed gentler handling. I had once before tried the Green batting, made from recycled plastic bottles, and I really hated it. Most of the thin poly batting stretches too easily with the handling required for loading up on the machine. I have lots of ideas for redesigning this frame, but I don't have the capability to make significant changes. But, oh, if I were to work with one of these manufacturers! <br />
<br />
Several more projects await...more photos to come!karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-28747464569821022862012-02-21T12:21:00.000-08:002012-02-21T12:21:54.753-08:00February Fun!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U_PeGgoHLqE/T0P53h5OSMI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/FrWJ0jehnhA/s1600/20120221_27.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-U_PeGgoHLqE/T0P53h5OSMI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/FrWJ0jehnhA/s320/20120221_27.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I finished up a couple things lately--Tara's 'Hearts' quilt that she handed to me with a "no hurry" deadline finally had its turn on the long arm. I love working on her quilts--the seams are pressed, her measurements are accurate, the top is squared up, and the whole quilt lies flat. Her tops are a dream to work on--she does great work! If you are the kind of quilter who "quilts by check" (rather than by hand or by machine), these are things that your long arm professional LOVES to see! Ask your quilter for other tips to make their job easier. My regular customers have a large Ziplock bag to put their next project into--it holds the top, batting and backing in one bag that won't get wet or dirty in transit to and from the customer, it's transparent so you can see what's in the bag, and it's re-usable!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/403622_3256162324611_1283689789_3378875_85225579_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/407031_3344720538511_1283689789_3413500_1926692814_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/407031_3344720538511_1283689789_3413500_1926692814_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Next quilt up on the long arm is another one of Tara's for her son, Andy. He likes unusual colors and patterns, and he lovingly selected these fabrics himself. He's my nephew, so he felt obligated to pester Auntie Karen to get his quilt done already...which he did last week. :) <br />
<br />
After this one, I have another six quilt in line to work on, plus the Watermelon Weave for Juana. I'm going to be busy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/403622_3256162324611_1283689789_3378875_85225579_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/403622_3256162324611_1283689789_3378875_85225579_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>I also started the anchors weave, but haven't had time to work on it much lately. I hope that I can finish it up this week to I can send it off to the new owner.<br />
<br />
Quilt happy!<br />

Here is my most recent experiment. It was an exercise in Egyptian Diagonals, assigned by a weaving mentor, and I think I got the hang of it! After figuring out how to do the basics, I experimented with turning and making different shapes and designs.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div>A few other things I've been working on include this Packers quilt for my sister's grandson. It's late in arriving for Christmas, but this was due to a family emergency--her friend was very ill and passed away in December. My sister went to be with her for her final days and Christmas was put on hold. I finished this and handed it off to her in early January.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5fGo4HeJwWk/TzGF_AI0X5I/AAAAAAAAAHg/-59HB48bCs4/s1600/2012+Tara's+second+Packer+quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5fGo4HeJwWk/TzGF_AI0X5I/AAAAAAAAAHg/-59HB48bCs4/s320/2012+Tara's+second+Packer+quilt.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The second half of the antique quilt completion project has concluded as well. These four quilts were tops originally hand-pieced by her grandmother, and were handed back to Tina this morning over coffee. She was delighted to have the quilts completed and ready to be added to her cozy home. <br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_vHjXpQKbOs/TzGGBzVNyyI/AAAAAAAAAHo/l-bd-TY45E0/s1600/2012+Tina's+antique+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_vHjXpQKbOs/TzGGBzVNyyI/AAAAAAAAAHo/l-bd-TY45E0/s320/2012+Tina's+antique+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This is the quilt that I added a different fabric on the back than what she had provided. She had picked up antique bed sheets--mostly--for the backs, but this one had been paired up with a Made-in-China, 100% polyester bedsheet. It was awful and I could not bear to sew this awful fabric to the back of this gorgeous hand-sewn quilt. I wrote to her begging to allow me to find something more suitable, and made a deal with a Civil War reproduction that I had found on sale a couple years ago. She loved it!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t9pWhR1cBIg/TzGGEahMk1I/AAAAAAAAAHw/Ki9-UkmoAtw/s1600/2012+Tina's+antique+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t9pWhR1cBIg/TzGGEahMk1I/AAAAAAAAAHw/Ki9-UkmoAtw/s320/2012+Tina's+antique+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
These are some fun quilts with space aliens on the tan fabric. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xPpQElA6t-I/TzGGNzeN3YI/AAAAAAAAAIA/FVY5uvTR3Dg/s1600/2012+Tina's+antique+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xPpQElA6t-I/TzGGNzeN3YI/AAAAAAAAAIA/FVY5uvTR3Dg/s320/2012+Tina's+antique+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">More of this alien fabric. Too fun!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf7AaRpJ_CU/TzGGRqxG4FI/AAAAAAAAAII/ConduRGqMas/s1600/2012+Tina's+antique.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf7AaRpJ_CU/TzGGRqxG4FI/AAAAAAAAAII/ConduRGqMas/s320/2012+Tina's+antique.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">More weaving that I have done. This one I thought the color combination was really striking! It's just over 4 yards and I am selling it for $60. I called it "Double Diamonds" since the pattern on the back also has diamonds.<br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bhz9_IC0NDE/TzGDI2tZiPI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/rhH50eh7Dcc/s1600/20111214_44.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bhz9_IC0NDE/TzGDI2tZiPI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/rhH50eh7Dcc/s320/20111214_44.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">This one took a lot more work, so I'd have to sell it for a bit more, but I'm not sure I'm ready to part with it...at least not yet. I could make another one like it if someone was interested in owning one like it and would sell it for $75. This one is also about 4 yards and is called "Ram's Horn." I love this pattern...maybe because I'm an Aries... <br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2H9kmaif-d8/TzGDm2toXWI/AAAAAAAAAGo/QRsrAehNI4g/s1600/2011+Tablet+weaving+rams+horns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2H9kmaif-d8/TzGDm2toXWI/AAAAAAAAAGo/QRsrAehNI4g/s320/2011+Tablet+weaving+rams+horns.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This is a piece of weaving that I called "Barony of Aquaterra, Kingdom of An Tir" due to its color combinations. Black, yellow & white are for the kingdom; blue, green & white are the Barony's. It was donated as a prize to the Ursulmas Medieval Faire and was given to a lady by the name of Emma.<br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJHhGORTVZk/TzGDrQCTN0I/AAAAAAAAAGw/Q5vOQWskcns/s1600/2011+Tablet+weaving+Aquaterra+An+Tir.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NJHhGORTVZk/TzGDrQCTN0I/AAAAAAAAAGw/Q5vOQWskcns/s320/2011+Tablet+weaving+Aquaterra+An+Tir.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This one I called "Black and White and Red all over", for obvious reasons. It was two yards and sold for $30. It was an experimental weave of a pattern that I just made up. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I can reproduce it exactly...I was trying to create a pattern from a finished piece I saw in a book, but was unsuccessful. It still looks interesting, but not what I was aiming for.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrB9QdcFA-s/TzGDt81wbFI/AAAAAAAAAG4/7eiwEHIWdaM/s1600/2011+tablet+weaving+Black+and+white+and+red+all+over.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrB9QdcFA-s/TzGDt81wbFI/AAAAAAAAAG4/7eiwEHIWdaM/s320/2011+tablet+weaving+Black+and+white+and+red+all+over.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
This is a commissioned piece for Molly. I worked out a special deal with her for this 4 yard piece. This was loosely based on a pattern I found online, but I did a different turning sequence to come up with this repeating pattern of diamonds. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0Gphg6PPrE/TzGDxiGVZfI/AAAAAAAAAHA/-cEHfWzCdMc/s1600/2012+Khabeelah+weaving.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z0Gphg6PPrE/TzGDxiGVZfI/AAAAAAAAAHA/-cEHfWzCdMc/s320/2012+Khabeelah+weaving.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
This is another 4 yard band that I called "Hugs and Kisses" (see the X and O?). I sold this one for $60 also. This was from an online pattern generator. <br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MsFth0D8vEU/TzGD4v9_nXI/AAAAAAAAAHI/J8yZLSb-Xa4/s1600/2011+tablet+weaving+hugs+n+kisses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MsFth0D8vEU/TzGD4v9_nXI/AAAAAAAAAHI/J8yZLSb-Xa4/s320/2011+tablet+weaving+hugs+n+kisses.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">This is another favorite, the Aquaterra band. A 4 yard piece for $60. This is also the Double Diamond pattern, but obviously with different color placement. This is one of my favorites, I think!<br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B8fjVf9CF5s/TzGD9W7zcRI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/RV7X4KhzdfI/s1600/2011+tablet+weaving+Aquaterra.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B8fjVf9CF5s/TzGD9W7zcRI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/RV7X4KhzdfI/s320/2011+tablet+weaving+Aquaterra.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
What's next on my docket? I've got a couple quilts for my sister--a pair of scrappy quilt tops--as well as a weaving band for a High School friend who wants a belt with Anchors on it. Another commission from Juana for a woven piece that looks like watermelons...that'll be fun! I also have a tunic to finish for Tyrssen, the 4th of 4 tunics he commissioned. </div>karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-14889372237107334202011-12-24T11:41:00.000-08:002011-12-24T11:47:18.299-08:00Late Fall 2011<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rHkhexYCBW8/TvUlkzD5PqI/AAAAAAAAAEs/EHE8S-gpVgM/s1600/20111123_45.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rHkhexYCBW8/TvUlkzD5PqI/AAAAAAAAAEs/EHE8S-gpVgM/s320/20111123_45.JPG" width="240" /></a> Keeping quite busy this fall, leading into Christmas time. My sister dropped off several quilt tops following a pre-holiday quilting frenzy. First is a top designated for her grandson, a HUGE Packer fan. Another Packer quilt is on the long arm now, but will be delivered some time later--a family emergency has put these on the back burner (she won't be able to bind them before Christmas, so she's going to deliver them sometime in the new year).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qJ8fz6_zfi8/TvUlnq3vTyI/AAAAAAAAAE0/jtFO6dFwfv4/s1600/20111123_48.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qJ8fz6_zfi8/TvUlnq3vTyI/AAAAAAAAAE0/jtFO6dFwfv4/s320/20111123_48.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Next is a top for her granddaughter, a sweet pink dots quilt. This one was super-easy to make, and just a ton of fun! I quilted it up with "3s and Es", which is pretty and fast to do, so it makes it one of my favorite all-over patterns to use. I used the same pattern for the Packers quilt and again on another quilt for my sister's neighbor.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uDQUvK4xAqI/TvYYOg9jDWI/AAAAAAAAAFw/t4SsRJlmdfQ/s1600/Good+Yule+053.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uDQUvK4xAqI/TvYYOg9jDWI/AAAAAAAAAFw/t4SsRJlmdfQ/s320/Good+Yule+053.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Then there was the emergency quilt for Linda, who is terminally ill. At the time, we knew she was ill and my sister decided to go visit with her for a week, but the week has turned into a month as they make arrangements for her comfort in her final days. The color on this photograph is not great, and it's hanging on another quilt on the wall, which makes it difficult to see where one quilt stops and another one starts. I'm working on finding a new place to display finished quilts for photographing. Hers has a black border, then a blue and purple checked border, then the black binding. Tara picked up the quilt just before getting on the plane to fly out to be with her. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2nl_3O2uVWY/TvUlzE_GFxI/AAAAAAAAAFE/ycU3fTyrcWg/s1600/2011+Tina%2527s+antiques+022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2nl_3O2uVWY/TvUlzE_GFxI/AAAAAAAAAFE/ycU3fTyrcWg/s320/2011+Tina%2527s+antiques+022.JPG" width="320" /></a>Just before Thanksgiving, I was given a stack of quilts to work on some antique quilts. These were made by Tina's grandmother, all sewn by hand, all fabrics from her scrap bag. There's a little bit of everything in these--dress materials, shirtings, kitchen towels, bedsheets, feed sacks...just everything. It's like a "Kitchen Sink" quilt. How's that for just coining a new phrase? Two of the quilts look like this one--squares on point.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tP2H3BQ86F8/TvUl2WlRFyI/AAAAAAAAAFM/BgDd_0c-nUM/s1600/2011+Tina%2527s+antiques+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tP2H3BQ86F8/TvUl2WlRFyI/AAAAAAAAAFM/BgDd_0c-nUM/s320/2011+Tina%2527s+antiques+003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>The third one is this much more complex hexagon pinwheels, again, all sewn by hand, all different fabrics. Her plan is to have all these finished to be able to distribute to family members as completed heirlooms. Tina does not sew except by hand, and completing seven of these quilt tops would be extraordinarily difficult to finish by the holidays, or any time next year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1UpP4_f1Ouk/TvUmKSZvhLI/AAAAAAAAAFk/DoGGYhJNTKA/s1600/20111218_4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1UpP4_f1Ouk/TvUmKSZvhLI/AAAAAAAAAFk/DoGGYhJNTKA/s320/20111218_4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>At the last minute, I got a call from Margaret, a mom from my kids' school, who needed a quilt finished up for her sister ASAP. She dropped it off on Thursday, I quilted up most of it that day then had to get a new spool of thread for the back (I was about 1 foot square short of completing it), and finished it up on Friday for her to pick up before the end of the school day. Since this quilt was all green and leafy, she asked for a leaf pattern to be quilted all over the top. I pulled the birch leaf pattern out of my repertoire and covered the surface with leaves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HL4nndTsyEM/TvUmEOSZS8I/AAAAAAAAAFU/BaNCvGmK0ko/s1600/20111214_52.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HL4nndTsyEM/TvUmEOSZS8I/AAAAAAAAAFU/BaNCvGmK0ko/s320/20111214_52.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>The other thing I've starting doing is card weaving. In the SCA, there is quite the demand for woven and embroidered trims. Although this may not be a documentable pattern (called "Ram's Horn"), it is plausibly period design using a period technique. I don't have a plan for all these pieces, so I'm considering partnering up with a merchant to sell them on consignment. I'm not a merchant and don't have enough wares to justify sitting at a table all day, but those who do and love it can earn a few bucks by having a few extra pieces in the shop...a little more variety. I think of it as a win-win.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MY_8bIqtiB0/TvUmHNeNQ6I/AAAAAAAAAFc/09fTKST4gB4/s1600/20111214_41.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MY_8bIqtiB0/TvUmHNeNQ6I/AAAAAAAAAFc/09fTKST4gB4/s320/20111214_41.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Here is my loom set up with a lovely piece that is also finished with a simple six forward-six back weave. It created a gorgeous pattern on the top and an equally beautiful pattern on the back. I'll have to do some more in different colorways. I recently picked up some non-heraldic colors that I'm anxious to get into, although I need to replace a few of the colors I'm running low on, like red and green.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/399005_2899886017926_1283689789_3211514_2014087639_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s720x720/399005_2899886017926_1283689789_3211514_2014087639_n.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>Right now I'm experimenting with a new weaving pattern that is documentable--a Saxon threaded-in pattern that alternates weaving the even and odd numbered cards, creating a narrower band, but is twice as thick. This makes it a more complex pattern but it also is nice to have a documented design that I can put on a garment or enter into competition. <br />
<br />
Hope you all have a great holiday--whatever you celebrate--and a fantastic new year!<br />

Here are a few items I've worked on in recent months.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WfKwdTJYpWQ/Tr2UyuyD8yI/AAAAAAAAACo/fgzDeYaUgtk/s1600/IMG_0122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WfKwdTJYpWQ/Tr2UyuyD8yI/AAAAAAAAACo/fgzDeYaUgtk/s320/IMG_0122.JPG" width="320" /></a>A quilt for American Heroes. I have one more quilt left in the pile, and should probably do that today, being Veteran's Day.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2_K-4QBgIz4/Tr2WU32TIpI/AAAAAAAAAEI/zZp9_lGxm_Y/s1600/Oct+2011+Mrs+Annabelle+Bransford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2_K-4QBgIz4/Tr2WU32TIpI/AAAAAAAAAEI/zZp9_lGxm_Y/s320/Oct+2011+Mrs+Annabelle+Bransford.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Halloween costume for myself as Mrs. Annabelle Bransford (from the movie "Maverick"). I made it from a pattern that I bought at the local fabric store, although it wasn't technically finished when I wore it. I ran out of fabric (and time) to make the bustle and couldn't find the boning for the back to add rigidity around the lacing, but it was wearable. I loved the red taffeta--it sewed up really well and wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. I hope to finish up the costume so that all the seams are finished and it's fully wearable. What you can't see is that I made the petticoat and under-trousers to go with it. I'd like to make a Civil War Southern belle dress, too. There are some really great patterns for those available, and I plan on picking one up soon. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IQHgleMR2zs/Tr2WKAP5a1I/AAAAAAAAAD4/Gtp6C_vuDNc/s1600/Halloween+2011+Kelly+as+Brett+Maverick.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IQHgleMR2zs/Tr2WKAP5a1I/AAAAAAAAAD4/Gtp6C_vuDNc/s320/Halloween+2011+Kelly+as+Brett+Maverick.jpg" width="191" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WstPRm_KUXs/Tr2VtDbgvnI/AAAAAAAAADo/MkYRoyieXOM/s1600/20111104_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WstPRm_KUXs/Tr2VtDbgvnI/AAAAAAAAADo/MkYRoyieXOM/s320/20111104_2.JPG" width="320" /></a>My darling husband's Halloween costume, Brett Maverick (from the movie, "Maverick"). I wanted to make it out of some kind of tapestry or decorator fabric, but had to settle for quilting cotton in a Civil War reproduction. When it was lined with muslin, it worked just fine, although I think if I were to run it through the washer, it would probably not look quite as nice. I will likely open up the sides and add some interfacing to stiffen it up. Again, if I were to make this for something other than a Halloween costume, I would have put a little more effort into it.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e4q0URS-j-k/Tr2dUzyYuiI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/aeTyF6uZnMI/s1600/Olivia+All+Saints+Day+2011" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e4q0URS-j-k/Tr2dUzyYuiI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/aeTyF6uZnMI/s320/Olivia+All+Saints+Day+2011" width="240" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gyMKroAN_QI/Tr2V5RgyBpI/AAAAAAAAADw/y31aYTlJzS8/s1600/2011+October+Margaret+Ward+costumes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gyMKroAN_QI/Tr2V5RgyBpI/AAAAAAAAADw/y31aYTlJzS8/s320/2011+October+Margaret+Ward+costumes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">I also made two vests for little girls to dress up as Medieval saints for All Saints Day. They both dressed as St. Margaret Ward, a woman who smuggled a rope into a prison to help a priest escape. They knew she had helped him (she was his only visitor). She was tortured and killed for refusing to tell where he was and for not attending Protestant services. The skirts were identical, made out of cotton broadcloth I had sitting in my stash, the undertunic is unbleached cotton muslin. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">My friend, Tyrssen, lives in the Midwest and commissioned some tunics from me. I made three and have one more to finish. This is the red one...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aCboo3Ti2Dg/Tr2U1_D6CuI/AAAAAAAAACw/EpTtJjC8ckk/s1600/IMG_0144.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aCboo3Ti2Dg/Tr2U1_D6CuI/AAAAAAAAACw/EpTtJjC8ckk/s320/IMG_0144.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And the yellow one...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gF8EsYwGm6g/Tr2U71JyQBI/AAAAAAAAAC4/xNt64dMfA10/s1600/IMG_0218.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gF8EsYwGm6g/Tr2U71JyQBI/AAAAAAAAAC4/xNt64dMfA10/s320/IMG_0218.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">On the quilting end, I quilted up this baby quilt for Susie in July.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dY-me4QJFGM/Tr2VAoUUgKI/AAAAAAAAADA/-L-LW8XeaDg/s1600/IMG_0239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dY-me4QJFGM/Tr2VAoUUgKI/AAAAAAAAADA/-L-LW8XeaDg/s320/IMG_0239.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aoqQBkwrmMo/Tr2VKN8TACI/AAAAAAAAADI/1iyP6A-V4Cc/s1600/Summer+2011+059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aoqQBkwrmMo/Tr2VKN8TACI/AAAAAAAAADI/1iyP6A-V4Cc/s320/Summer+2011+059.JPG" width="320" /></a>I quilted up this little thing for Donna's mom, who entered it in the fair as her First Quilt, and she won second place for her age category! I think she just turned 82!</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pZoqT8YOgjI/Tr2VLoTBQxI/AAAAAAAAADQ/A92_sMkIwLY/s1600/Summer+2011+060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pZoqT8YOgjI/Tr2VLoTBQxI/AAAAAAAAADQ/A92_sMkIwLY/s320/Summer+2011+060.JPG" width="240" /></a>Next here is a little quilt I made for our guild's "Celebration" challenge. I just used scraps to make these "presents" and made candles as the loops to hold it, and 3-D ribbons adorn the boxes. I didn't win, but it was fun!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9RmOVV-1eGk/Tr2VoLRc9_I/AAAAAAAAADY/K_RkO4dwChk/s1600/20111024_4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9RmOVV-1eGk/Tr2VoLRc9_I/AAAAAAAAADY/K_RkO4dwChk/s320/20111024_4.JPG" width="240" /></a>Val handed me this quilt top to quilt up for her. She won the $50 gift certificate that I donated to the Christmas raffle. This cute top of printed mooses among stars has echo quilting around the mooses and stars quilted in the yellow stars.</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KACZZbDXWlM/Tr2VrRmH8EI/AAAAAAAAADg/mJPfRcWI0xo/s1600/20111104_8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KACZZbDXWlM/Tr2VrRmH8EI/AAAAAAAAADg/mJPfRcWI0xo/s320/20111104_8.JPG" width="320" /></a>Violet brought over this giant quilt top that she is finishing for her daughter. It measures 108" square! My machine maxes out at about 110", so it was just big enough to fit on there. If I had more room in my quilting space, I would get longer rods to put on my machine frame so I can quilt up even larger quilts (up to 120" with room on the sides to easily change bobbin thread, etc.). Although I can put a top on there that is up to 120", I cannot quilt the five inches on either side and changing bobbins becomes quite difficult. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qmoPoT-YT6o/Tr2WP3aGAII/AAAAAAAAAEA/c2C_0w7zbbw/s1600/Quilt+for+Michele+Oct+2011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qmoPoT-YT6o/Tr2WP3aGAII/AAAAAAAAAEA/c2C_0w7zbbw/s320/Quilt+for+Michele+Oct+2011.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> Michele gave me three quilt tops to finish for her for Christmas. This is one of them. It has holly leaves quilted across the green parts, and veins quilted into the leaves. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">There are several more quilts in line, including two Green Bay Packer quilts for my sister Tara, three other Friendship quilts she also finished recently, and the first three of seven antiques that Tina gave to me to finish that her Grandmother made. She plans to distribute them to her family members as heirlooms. I have a few things on the list now...it should make for a busy month!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Although she has not quite reached the double-digits, Cammie is already an accomplished quilt maker and pattern designer--at least, for her age, I think she's quite accomplished! She has a talent for very creative designs that she draws out and reproduces in fabric, which I helped stitch down. I hope that she learns even more this year and has samples to show next year when we go on the 2012 shop hop! </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Shop Hop is a great time for the camaraderie of quilting friends, exploration of new ideas and techniques, and of course, supporting your local quilt shops! I filled my mental files with lots of new and interesting ideas, took lots of pictures, and purchased some patterns and books for future projects. I'm inspired and can't wait to start on some new projects...or finishing some old ones!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvsQKd6IRKE/TggCPQuU3VI/AAAAAAAAACk/qMmjh0l6F3c/s1600/IMG_0099.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SvsQKd6IRKE/TggCPQuU3VI/AAAAAAAAACk/qMmjh0l6F3c/s320/IMG_0099.JPG" width="320" /></a>Just before I headed out to do the Shop Hop, I finished this American Heroes quilt. The pattern is an all-over loops and stars pattern (not sure what the white dot is to the far left--I think it was lint on the camera lens--it certainly wasn't something on the quilt). I have three more to go in the pile of quilts for this great organization!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Stay Merrie!</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Karen, Ye Merrie Quilter</div>karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-10522425931495230632011-06-23T00:13:00.000-07:002011-06-23T00:13:08.802-07:00A few more projects from recent weeks<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">As I was going through the old photos, I found a few that I didn't post. Here are a few from as far back as January that I worked on. Of course, not everything that I've worked on was photographed--chronic problems with a camera or simply forgetting has resulted in a few missed works.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2OE5hiW4XQ/TgLjooiEx7I/AAAAAAAAABQ/QkGo2MsbvMg/s1600/DSCN0603.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f2OE5hiW4XQ/TgLjooiEx7I/AAAAAAAAABQ/QkGo2MsbvMg/s320/DSCN0603.JPG" width="320" /></a>This is actually just a bunch of blocks pinned to the "design wall" (aka a quilt hanging in my dining room) that I later sewed into a quilt top. It still needs a border and then it will be quilted up and given to the guild for its community service committee. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RIM8josnDAI/TgLj18DrnLI/AAAAAAAAABc/I0fEyJcoVtU/s1600/DSCN0553.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RIM8josnDAI/TgLj18DrnLI/AAAAAAAAABc/I0fEyJcoVtU/s320/DSCN0553.JPG" width="240" /></a>This is a quilt that I finished for a school auction for a friend. Sharon did the top with the kids in the class who drew self-portraits with fabric markers. She then pieced up the top, handed it to me, and I quilted in the blue areas. We both agreed that we shouldn't quilt over the kids' faces, so I filled the blue areas with loose curly-cues that I call "Dr. Seuss Feathers". Sorry it's upside down. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

We made these log cabin blocks and Donna arranged them, put the border on, and handed it to me to quilt up. It turned out beautifully! I quilted loops and hearts all over the top.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

I love the brights and the contrast with the black and whites, like those early visual stimulus toys but with pink instead of red. It's big enough and mature enough to grow into it. I'm sure she'll treasure it for years! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Besides the yurt, which is a personal project, I've had time to finish a few jobs in the world of softer fibers.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X6T0D0KjruY/TgI1dtzlf5I/AAAAAAAAAA4/GTzjjX5BKsc/s1600/IMG_1772.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X6T0D0KjruY/TgI1dtzlf5I/AAAAAAAAAA4/GTzjjX5BKsc/s320/IMG_1772.JPG" width="320" /></a>This tunic was made for a friend of mine on commission. He joined the SCA just a couple years ago and needs some good period tunics, and I am thrilled that he chose me to get him suited up! The tricky part is that he lives in the Midwest and I'm on the coast. Thank goodness for email and the USPS!</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ebgBWXARrks/TgI1hdvjKbI/AAAAAAAAAA8/YeXsVMPiZgs/s1600/IMG_1736.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ebgBWXARrks/TgI1hdvjKbI/AAAAAAAAAA8/YeXsVMPiZgs/s320/IMG_1736.JPG" width="320" /></a>All the seams are finished to prevent unraveling and increase the life of the garment. As long as he doesn't change sizes, this should fit him for a long time. I was really happy to find that I already had a spool of thread in my stash that matched the tunic perfectly! The fabric is 100% linen and was pre-washed to prevent further shrinkage and warping later.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8uTQpwlLXDE/TgI1mtgcggI/AAAAAAAAABA/CDy_NtVJcec/s1600/IMG_1733.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8uTQpwlLXDE/TgI1mtgcggI/AAAAAAAAABA/CDy_NtVJcec/s320/IMG_1733.JPG" width="320" /></a>Since it's officially summertime--according to the calendar, anyway--it's time to start knitting Turkish socks! I don't know why, but last year about this time, I was motivated to make Turkish socks...and here we are again! These are for myself, but this is a great period accessory to add you your ensemble! This pair is being made from 100% alpaca yarns from Norway and the pattern is called "Mirrors" from the Fancy Feet book.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o0_7_OqFnR0/TgI6AHR4Y2I/AAAAAAAAABI/Z05Ht_8QSkk/s1600/IMG_0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o0_7_OqFnR0/TgI6AHR4Y2I/AAAAAAAAABI/Z05Ht_8QSkk/s320/IMG_0004.JPG" width="320" /></a>Here's a quilt that I finished for the American Heroes quilt project. These tops were made by other quilters and volunteers, like myself, quilt up the tops up and hand them off to the next person for binding. These quilts are given to the soldiers returning from war at Madigan Hospital in Tacoma.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-15YrnxZX_SE/TgI6GpIUVsI/AAAAAAAAABM/VGLAmWEqXbI/s1600/IMG_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-15YrnxZX_SE/TgI6GpIUVsI/AAAAAAAAABM/VGLAmWEqXbI/s320/IMG_0005.JPG" width="240" /></a>Detail of the quilting and blocks. I did a medium loop-de-loop all over the surface. It went really well and things were stitched down smoothly. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Today started with a tune-up on the long arm frame. Several of the fittings on the ends of the rods had wiggled loose over time, so a quick tightening with a wrench and we're ready to go! A new quilt is up on the racks now, ready for quilting!</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Have a great summer!</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Karen, Ye Merrie Quilter</div>karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03179797997135250720noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9217272166205256220.post-22127065758385820112011-06-03T21:43:00.000-07:002011-06-03T21:43:51.896-07:00Some Recent Projects<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JnPdB7laxrI/Temy6PSpSRI/AAAAAAAAAAc/2HknQ1Bc7lo/s1600/DSCN0956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JnPdB7laxrI/Temy6PSpSRI/AAAAAAAAAAc/2HknQ1Bc7lo/s320/DSCN0956.JPG" width="320" /></a>This is a quilt I'm very excited about...because it's MINE! I swapped these blocks online several years ago and finally got them into a completed quilt top, added some hourglass blocks as a border, and used scrappy blues as the outer border. I then quilted a very detailed pattern all over the surface. I love the way it turned out and I'm so excited to get it finished and on my bed for the summer. It measures 105", which is about as big as I can comfortably get on my machine. I have had one that was 110", but it was much more awkward to work with, and once a quilt was 114", but I had to quilt most of it, then shift it over to finish one of the borders that I couldn't reach with the machine.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-phAVijYo4Rc/Temy9lbjEeI/AAAAAAAAAAk/hpHaI8LEwLA/s1600/DSCN0933.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-phAVijYo4Rc/Temy9lbjEeI/AAAAAAAAAAk/hpHaI8LEwLA/s320/DSCN0933.JPG" width="320" /></a>This is a great detail shot of the quilting pattern I did on the sawtooth stars. I used plain old white thread, but the quilting was very dense and really makes it pop! It took about seven hours of quilting to finish, though, and it required that I take several breaks to get the kink out of my neck. I'm not sure what I would charge for something this detailed...probably 2 or 3 cents a square inch. I don't normally like charging that much, but this particular one was very time consuming.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b-NgcOaB4MI/Temy8JB58fI/AAAAAAAAAAg/TulSKYn8hq0/s1600/DSCN0962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b-NgcOaB4MI/Temy8JB58fI/AAAAAAAAAAg/TulSKYn8hq0/s320/DSCN0962.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Just laying the next quilt on top of the first, this is a quilt I finished up for Kathleen. I LOVE the background fabric, which looks like the old fashioned marbled paper that they used in books. I believe that this Irish Chain was a store sample that she needed for a class she taught. Now that the class is over, she decided it was time to get it quilted up. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kvl1e9ibJGM/Temy_WWeTLI/AAAAAAAAAAo/d2mjru19Uo0/s1600/DSCN0965.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kvl1e9ibJGM/Temy_WWeTLI/AAAAAAAAAAo/d2mjru19Uo0/s320/DSCN0965.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is a little thing from Donna. This little patriotic table topper measures about 20" square. I covered it with a stipple of stars and ribbons (stripes?). I believe that this is a gift for her mom.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-To9A5umUcO4/TemzTMNEW3I/AAAAAAAAAAs/sg1jmJNJOvQ/s1600/DSCN0733.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-To9A5umUcO4/TemzTMNEW3I/AAAAAAAAAAs/sg1jmJNJOvQ/s320/DSCN0733.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Pat, from one of the guilds, gave me this one to finish as a gift for her husband. It took some time to find just the right quilt pattern, but the day before it was due, I found the right one. I got it to her just in time for her to put the binding on it and present it to him for their anniversary.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LrHjV9ggEUw/TemzVE6c0II/AAAAAAAAAAw/Soqg-Uwv_D0/s1600/DSCN0742.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LrHjV9ggEUw/TemzVE6c0II/AAAAAAAAAAw/Soqg-Uwv_D0/s320/DSCN0742.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I've also been making socks. I have a couple pairs that I have already made and sent to the new owner, but here is a sample I made for myself. These are a reproduction of simple 16th century women's stockings. I later made garters to accompany them--because the did not have ribbing stitches, the stockings did not stay up well on their own. For a picture, yes, but once you begin walking around, they're at your ankles almost immediately.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oOmmx_2spb4/TemzdCYqYFI/AAAAAAAAAA0/gBvQaqqsPXI/s1600/DSCN0693.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oOmmx_2spb4/TemzdCYqYFI/AAAAAAAAAA0/gBvQaqqsPXI/s320/DSCN0693.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Here is a little quilt that I quilted up for Michele--it was a round robin that she did in another guild. I did a different pattern for each round, but sadly, I don't have any detailed pictures of those. Wasn't really thinking ahead, there....</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wS9bYQOfHFY/TekEXlEzH_I/AAAAAAAAAAM/qNwg-7fTSrI/s1600/DSCN0796.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wS9bYQOfHFY/TekEXlEzH_I/AAAAAAAAAAM/qNwg-7fTSrI/s320/DSCN0796.JPG" width="313" /></a>I have been working on some other quilting projects around the house recently, mostly from my stash. These blocks started from a collection of 6" charm squares that were traded in our guild. I cut a few extras of the ones that I had used to trade and made these split 9-patch blocks. With some difficulty, I found this was the most pleasing arrangement. Perhaps with more blocks and colors, I would have made something that I would like even more.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqf9X25s2Hs/TekEbVKEVtI/AAAAAAAAAAQ/U4vProspDsg/s1600/DSCN0797.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lqf9X25s2Hs/TekEbVKEVtI/AAAAAAAAAAQ/U4vProspDsg/s320/DSCN0797.JPG" width="240" /></a>This quilt was made from donated fabrics to the guild which I made into a lap quilt or maybe something big enough for a toddler or elementary school kid. Most of these quilts get donated to the local Children's Hospital to be given to kids who have extended stays at the hospital.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TqPSDAG7m34/TekFCkGhWJI/AAAAAAAAAAU/mtiUjxJn7sA/s1600/2-9E48C1D3-2092989-800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TqPSDAG7m34/TekFCkGhWJI/AAAAAAAAAAU/mtiUjxJn7sA/s1600/2-9E48C1D3-2092989-800.jpg" /></a>This was just a few pieces that were left over that I made into a matching doll quilt. This is also donated to local charities.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aaIT4JmvZrs/TekFm0w2eAI/AAAAAAAAAAY/S4Gdkvvrb-o/s1600/2-005967A3-1362356-800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aaIT4JmvZrs/TekFm0w2eAI/AAAAAAAAAAY/S4Gdkvvrb-o/s1600/2-005967A3-1362356-800.jpg" /></a>This is a costume I made for my daughter for a school activity. She required a pink kimono, which I made from some linen that I had set aside for our history society. I wasn't sure what I was going to make out of it, but this seems to be the perfect thing! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

I am happy to report that Ye Merrie Quilter (and Costumer!) now has a new home. I hope to include several new additions to the blog for the various projects that I've been working on, both in quilting and costuming. I have begun to expand my business in what I'm doing for hire to include the various knitting and sewing that I have been doing for others as well as the quilting.<br />
<br />
Enjoy! And as always, I remain,<br />
